SHELLFISH WARDEN: Mike Pinkham

Maine's municipal shellfish programs do important work to help support shellfishing as a livelihood and way of life. Dr. Bridie McGreavy and her students have been studying shellfish programs in and around Frenchman Bay, including the towns of Gouldsboro and Steuben, and along the coast to understand factors that shape the success of these programs and strategies to improve them. In this presentation, they will share what they have learned and provide recommendations for how towns can strengthen their efforts to manage and sustain shellfish as a vital resource, focusing on forming partnerships with other town organizations, the role of leadership, and ways to learn about the access scientific information. They will also share and ask for feedback on a related project, known as Clam Cam, that uses GoPro cameras to document clamming and help people learn what it takes to get clams from mud to market to plate. Dr. McGreavy is an Assistant Professor of Environmental Communication in the Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of Maine and is also a member of the Maine Shellfish Advisory Council. For more information about this presentation and her research, e-mail bridie.mcgreavy@maine.edu or call (207)581-1943. Next Shellfish meeting will be held October 10th at 6PM at the Gouldsboro Community Center.
